Vince Scalabrino

I enjoy building things. Most of all, I enjoy building products that delight customers in unexpected ways. This delight has led them to use my products more, because the products HELP them. This in turn, drives business outcomes.

Some examples include: a new customer engagement platform for one of the largest pharmacy retailers in the world, a simple charitable giving engine, a global marketing automation and deal distribution platform for McDonald's, the world's first peripheral-driven extreme sports video games (Tony Hawk: Ride & Tony Hawk: Shred), and the world's first digitally-integrated restaurant+arcade+tabletop game pub (Tokens & Tankards).

I've always found the most satisfaction and success when empowered to focus on the why before the what, with a cross-functional, (AKA Balanced) Team, that shares working hours (remote or co-located).

What I Do

Special Skills

Product Discovery

What is our product vision? What are our customers' biggest pain points? Why are they choosing to use or not use a particular feature? What outcomes are we driving for our customers, that in turn drive business outcomes? This is the why behind the what and where my teams and I spend at least 50% of our time.

Product Delivery

Multivariate testing of our assumptions and hypotheses, feature documentation and prioritization, driving alignment across teams, defining success and measuring against that definition - all of these things and more are a part of my daily routine.

Startup Experience

I founded and scaled two startups, and have helped to scale three more. These spanned a number of domains including streaming audio networks, game studios and digitally-integrated arcade and tabletop gaming pubs. Most recently, I led work at TCGplayer from M&A due diligence to post-deal, integrating the BinderPOS business into our existing seller offerings. I am very familiar with all of the thrills and stress that startup life entails.

Technical Background

I began my career as a software engineer at Motorola and still occasionally write code on the side. I also have 2 patents that involve AI and retail fulfillment automation. See my Portfolio for details.

Resume

Experience

Mar 2023 - Present
eBay, Inc. / TCGplayer, Inc.

Principal Product Manager, Digitization

In my current role, I lead a team focused on leveraging the power of robotics, humans and AI to build solutions that turn the physical into digital. We automate menial labor to help collectibles retailers around the world improve their businesses.

2021 - Feb 2023
TCGplayer, Inc.

Senior Product Manager, Business Services

My team and I at TCGplayer brought efficiency, profitability, and delight to thousands of local game and hobby store owners around the country.

2019 - 2021
Walgreens Boots Alliance

Senior Product Manager

At Walgreens, I created and own a nascent roadmap focused on Community Giving and Customer Retention, implemented via our mobile app, website, loyalty program, and in-store experiences.

I'm most proud of a product I launched that allows Walgreens customers to donate their myWalgreens Cash rewards to charity. It raised over $20,000 in its first 3 months. See Portfolio for details.

2017 - 2019
McDonald's

Product Manager, Marketing Technology

My team developed and deployed the marketing technology stack used by our global and US marketing teams to drive business to over 37,000 restaurants around the globe. Our core product was a marketing automation platform built on one of the largest Adobe Campaign installations in the world, delivering over 30 million push notifications and email daily to our global customer base of over 300 million digital customers.

2015 - 2016
Tokens & Tankards, Inc.

Founder, CEO

Tokens & Tankards was a nostalgic, digitally-integrated restaurant, arcade bar and tabletop game pub concept that I conceived, secured funding for, and launched in Chicago’s NW suburbs. We had 4 stars on Yelp, 4.9 stars on Facebook and 4.5 stars on Google when we closed. I learned more in this single year about myself and what it takes to run a successful business than I probably would have in 3-4 years getting an MBA.

2010 - 2015
Razorfish, Manifest LLC

Various Marketing Agency Delivery Roles

At Razorfish and then Manifest, I led teams of project managers, developers and designers across a portfolio of consumer and retail brands. My portfolios included programs and product builds focused primarily on retail innovation, user experience, marketing, and design consultancy.

2008 - 2010
Robomodo

Senior (Game) Producer

Joining the production team at Robomodo, one of my childhood dreams came true. I got paid to make video games! I wore many hats at this startup, including product owner, scrum master and localization designer. We built Tony Hawk: RIDE and Tony Hawk: Shred, the first fully-integrated, peripheral-driven skateboarding and snowboarding console games. We developed from scratch a game engine, hardware device (the Freeboard), and two games based on this platform, in less than three years. It was a wild ride, but was my first real taste of product work. And I loved it.

2007 - 2008
iCrossing

Project Manager

This was my entry into the world of marketing agency life, which I would revisit later. Here, I managed account teams delivering innovative digital marketing engagements to a variety of Fortune 500 companies that include natural search optimization (SEO), paid search, market research, creative and web development campaigns.

2006-2007
Various Chicago Streaming Media/Music Startups

Owner, DJ, Lead Producer

This was my first leap into full-time entrepreneurialism, founding a mobile DJ business while scaling an early streaming audio content network startup. For the streaming audio startup, I recorded and edited 10 live-streamed talk radio shows/podcasts that broadcast 3-5x weekly. While doing the above, I created, wrote, co-hosted, recorded and edited Play or Die, a gaming/pop culture podcast.

2005 - 2006
Motorola Solutions

IT Project Manager

After asking my manager "why am I building this?" a few too many times, he told me to figure it out for myself and take on a leadership role.

We didn't have software product managers back then, so I joined the Program Management team. My charter was ensuring that the IT projects I was assigned to were delivered on time, within budget and met or exceeded our business stakeholders’ expectations and needs.

2000 - 2004
Motorola Solutions

IT Software Engineer

I began my career as backend developer, working mostly in Oracle PL/SQL, ASP.NET and VB. My crowning achievement was an enterprise 2-way radio part configurator app that I built the front and back-end for. I conceived its feature set based on user interviews with sales engineers and support staff.

Education

2020
Product Talk Academy

Defining Outcomes

2018
Codecademy

Build APIs from Scratch Immersive

This was a detailed 3 month immersive focused on JavaScript, Node.js and Express, with an introduction to unit testing with Mocha and Chai. As part of the course, I created the backend for 3 web apps, which can be found on my Github profile.

2017
General Assembly

Product Management

I completed General Assembly's rigorous and pragmatic Product Management curriculum, under the tutelage of Chika Umeadi. The course covered a range of Product skills, and put each of them into practice via development of a new product. For more information on the product I conceived, completed discovery around and created a prototype for, see my Portfolio.
